When I first got married, I didn't even know I could bake, let alone decorate a cake! But two years later, once I was pregnant with my first child, something about all those hormones swirling around in my system made me want to learn everything I could about cooking, and my interests immediately turned to baking.

My first cake ever was a three layer carrot cake with cream cheese icing, and needless to say, my husband was terribly skeptical that it would turn out. I was so proud of myself when it did, and from them on, I was hooked on baking. I started watching Rose Levy-Beranbaum's Baking Magic every time it came on PBS, and before long had my first Kitchen Aid stand mixer and an arsenal of recipes. I began checking out arm loads of books from the library and would pour over them for hours. I became fascinated with the science of baking, with how mounds of dough rise, and how baking really is more of a science, where cooking is an art.

In April 2006, I decorated my very first cake for a friend's baby shower that I hosted, and that only deepened my interest in baking and decorating. In October 2006, I decided to begin Butterfly Sweets (named for my tenacious daughter who adores butterflies and is also very, very sweet). In March 2007, I entered the Sugar Wonders Cake Show, entered my pink hydrangea wedding cake, and won an award!

I have a bit of an eclectic resume-I attended Texas A&M University, where I studied International Business and then Biomedical Science in hopes of becoming a veterinarian. I studied at the Universite de Caen in France, where I was an exchange student, studied French and became fluent. I have worked for the A&M dog cloning Missyplicity project, numerous veterinarians, at a pathology laboratory, have been a telemarketer, an administrative assistant, have done boring data entry, worked at a very hoity-toity high end baby boutique, a Christian book publisher, and my least favorite job was being a receptionist for a podiatrist (yuck!). Writing is one of my true loves, and I have won a couple of awards for that. In 2003 I became a stay at home mom, and have loved nothing more. I now have two children, and am married to my high school sweetheart.

The cake was a huge success....it was incredibly moist and tasted great! My mom really enjoyed it and everyone thought it was just beautiful.
